Front-Edge Sink Splash Guard vs. Faucet Mat: Which Do You Need?

A front-edge sink splash guard and a faucet mat sit in different places and address different water problems. A standing guard belongs along the sink edge nearest your body, where it helps intercept splashes coming toward you. A faucet mat sits around the faucet base, where it catches drips and, depending on its design, directs water toward the basin.

Start by noticing where water lands during your usual washing routine. That tells you more than a product name alone: both types may appear in searches for “sink splash guard.”

When a front-edge splash guard makes sense

If water splashes toward your shirt or the front of the counter while you rinse dishes, look at a guard that stands between you and the basin. Its upright wall is positioned across that path. It needs a suitable ledge at the front of the sink, with enough flat space to support the entire base.

Aster & River makes two gray silicone models for this position. Both are made in South Korea from thin, flexible silicone. Their flat bases rest against a clean, smooth countertop without separate suction cups. Fit and grip depend on your surface and placement; keep dishes and rinsing movements over the basin.

When a faucet mat makes sense

If the wet area is mainly around your faucet handles, soap dispenser or faucet base, a faucet mat may be the more relevant option. These mats typically lie around the faucet instead of forming an upright barrier along the front edge. Some use a slope or drainage channels to guide collected water into the sink.

Check the specific mat’s opening, depth and drainage direction before ordering. A faucet deck plate, nearby wall or separate handle can affect placement. Follow that product’s fitting and cleaning instructions; different designs have different requirements.

Choosing between Aster & River Standard and Wide

For a front-edge guard, measure the ledge where you stand. The two models differ in both length and height:

Dimensions are listed as length × base depth × height. Leave room for your hands and normal washing movements, and support the full base on a smooth, flat surface. See our Size & Care Guide for measuring, placement and cleaning steps.

Can you use both?

If you have both front-facing splashes and drips near the faucet, each accessory may have a separate role. Check that both fit independently and leave access for cleaning, controls and washing. You may only need one if water collects in a single area.

Choose for the problem you see, then measure the installation space. For splashes toward you, compare Standard and Wide above. For drips around the faucet, check a mat designed for that location.
